Song Dunn the Worm ( alt )
    Artist The Sugarplastic
    Album Resin
    Genre Pop
Comment: Does this band really exist, or it is a figment of their fans' collective imaginations? Sometimes it's so difficult to be sure. Besides an aversion to performing live, the Burbank, CA-based Sugarplastic seem to disappear completely from view between their sporadic releases, which occur on labels so miniscule as to challenge the definition of "independent" -- or even more perversely, on 45 RPM vinyl. That The Sugarplastic languish in obscurity (partly self-imposed) is a pity, because each recording is a discovery, a pop phantasm, blending ridiculously hooky melodies, sonic inventions and lyrical surrealism. One moment they seem to be channeling XTC (to which they are frequently compared), the next the Beatles, Alex Chilton, or 10CC. Or who knows? In fairness, The Sugarplastic's ever-shifting soundscape is uniquely their own, defying easy comparisons or labels. So let's just call it "thinking-man's pop" and be done with it. The iTunes Music Stores is now listing some of the band's otherwise impossible to find recordings, including the 2000 release "Resin," from which the track "Dunn the Worm" was almost arbitrarily selected. Give it a listen -- and let The Sugarplastic become a figment of your imagination. - IJ Reilly
