Song Better Off Dead ( alt )
    Artist Randy Newman
    Album Bad Love
    Genre Rock
Comment: Randy Newman is now into his fifth decade as a "gifted songwriter," as music critics like to label him when they can't think of more appropriate words to describe his towering talent. Newman's lyrical narratives are rarely obvious, and have a habit revealing themselves slowly over multiple listenings, often doubling back over themselves in unexpected ways -- a rare if not unique experience in pop music. Most remarkably he accomplishes this song writing black magic without the usual self-consciousness, contrivance or overwriting that plagues even some top songwriters. The sophistication of his compositions and arrangements have also grown along with his more recent forays into film scoring. This track, from Newman's last album of new material, the remarkable 1999 effort "Bad Love," combines his crafty lyrics with a deliberately overblown and sappy arrangement. Newman's gruff vocals, which have loosened up considerably in recent years to good effect, clue us in to the joke -- even if we can't be entirely sure who it's on. It could be the narrator, it could be the singer, or could be us. I can't say for certain, and Randy Newman is never one to deny us the pleasure of coming to our own conclusions. - IJ Reilly
